Give us a brief introduction to who you are and to your business (what you do):
We are a small, family-owned restaurant in Stover, MO. We serve authentic Mexican dishes with our own unique recipes. We are a partnership that includes Jose Lopez, Ezequiel Ayala, and Francisco Juarez.
Tell us about how your business got started:
Our restaurant is the second location and is in partnership with the original Veracruz restaurant in Versailles, MO.
Veracruz was named for the state in Mexico that is known for its beauty and for the variety of foods found there.
We have been friends for many years. Jose moved to this area from Virginia Beach, VA. Francisco and Ezequiel soon followed and began working for him, which then led to the two of them opening and managing the second location in partnership with Jose.
Why do you do what you do?
We enjoy getting to be part of our community and getting to know our customers. It is rewarding to see families come together over a meal.
What are some things that help you stand out as a business?
We really like to celebrate birthdays by singing a traditional Mexican birthday song, placing a sombrero or birthday hat on the head of the birthday person, and serving fried ice cream with whipped cream to them. We also share the Mexican tradition of touching whipped cream to their forehead, cheeks, and chin and often we are asked to go ahead and cover their whole face with whipped cream by a family member.
What do you envision for the future of your business?
We are interested in expanding to a third location. We hope to continue to grow with the support of the community.
What is something that inspires you each day in your work?
We are inspired by seeing our customers return because they have enjoyed their meal. We are inspired by creating recipes with the freshest ingredients.
What are some great things about the local area?
There is a lot of value in small-town life. We come from large cities and it is extraordinary to see how close everyone is in this area. There are some great schools here and the local theater (Royal Theater in Versailles) has many talented performers. They often have plays, musical performances, and an annual talent show, among other events. We are centrally located within an hour of Jefferson City and the Lake of the Ozarks.
How can customers and consumers support local businesses like yours?
We really appreciated everyone utilizing to-go orders during the time we had to close for the pandemic. We still have the to-go system and can do curbside per customers’ preference. We also have gift cards available that work at both locations. The important thing for all small business is to keep communication open, even if they are not operating in the usual fashion. They may be able to accommodate getting products to customers, they just need to know there is an interest.
